Gavin Proudie is a celebrated swordsman, nearly unbeatable in a fencing bout. When he is challenged to a match by a masked stranger, he ignores his best judgement and accepts, only to lose in a crushing defeat. He sets out on a mission to discover the identity of the mystery duelist.

Cecilia Slade thinks it a lark to challenge a gentleman, more so when she wins. The adventure takes a wrong turn when said gentleman will stop at nothing to uncover who has bested him. Her decision to distract him with her feminine wiles may prove unwise if he unmasks her deception.
