Forms of Address
A cheat sheet for addressing the hero
The graphic provided here is a cheat sheet on how to address the hero of our beloved novels.
Notice his first name and surname are never used.
"Formal," as designated in the cheat sheet, is for anyone who is not a close friend, family member, or social equal, while "informal" is only for close friends, family, and social equals.
Once a title is inherited, the person becomes that title, shedding the family name. No longer is the Earl of Macchiato called Hubert Handsome. He is now the Earl of Macchiato, Lord Macchiato, or just Macchiato.
In writing, if we need to establish his first name, we can do it thusly: Hubert, Lord Macchiato OR Hubert, Earl of Macchiato.
But we would never ever ever mix the first name or surname with the title, such as Lord Hubert Handsome or Lord Hubert Macchiato or Lord Hubert Handsome Macchiato. Eeek!
