Wedding Bands
A brief history of the wedding band tradition
Without peeking at the answer, do you know if Regency husbands wore wedding bands?
The short answer: No.
A wedding ring was worn only by the bride.
During the Georgian/Regency periods, the marriage ceremony focused on the bridegroom placing a ring on the bride's finger as a symbol of the marriage covenant. The gentleman did not receive or wear one himself.
The widespread custom of men wearing wedding bands didn't take hold until the 20th century, namely during World War II, when servicemen began wearing rings as reminders of their wives while overseas. By the 1950s, it had become increasingly common in the United States, and then by the late 1970s, that habit spread to Britain, as well.
So if your Regency duke absently twists his gold wedding band while contemplating life...
...he's about 125 years early!
