Year Without a Summer

No summer ball or or picnic in 1816. Can you guess why?

Imagine planning a summer ball… and waking to frost.

In 1816, Europe experienced what became known as “The Year Without a Summer.”

Temperatures dropped, skies turned grey, and crops failed across entire regions. Snow fell in June. Frost struck in July.

The cause? Not politics. Not coincidence. A massive volcanic eruption! Mount Tambora erupted in 1815 and sent ash into the atmosphere, blocking sunlight and disrupting global weather patterns, the slow spread reaching across Europe and beyond.

The result of the eruption included:

  • failed harvests

  • soaring food prices

  • bread riots and unrest

  • and a bleak, cold “summer” no one could ignore

Needless to say, if your hist rom story is set in 1816, your characters wouldn’t be enjoying sunny picnics!

How would you have survived a summer that never arrived?
